The sexiest sheep
A few years ago a friend gave us a British book called “Beautiful Sheep” which simply consists of beautiful photographs of prize-winning sheep. The kind that are bathed and barbered (not sheared) before being entered into a competition.
If I had to choose the sexiest sheep in Portugal, I'd say there's a good chance it would be the Churra Mondegueira breed, preferably a “Marialveira” type. They don't bathe because they spend every day of the year grazing extensively, but their heavy fleeces with long, sometimes curly strands give them that special charm.
The fleeces from these Churras Mondegueiras were also the stars of the last Raw wool Fleece Felting workshop with Ana Rita de Albuquerque.
For those who want to repeat the adventure or try something new, you can find the latest Churra Mondegueira "Marialveira " wool fleeces in the online store, selected by Alice at the time of shearing and sourced from an organically reared flock.
Churra Mondegueira wool is known for being thick, wild and with a double layer of fibers. Not being the most suitable for pieces that want to be delicate and soft, it shines when you take advantage of its primitive character.
