For those who don't know, between the 15th and 17th centuries, the Azores had an important woad industry! Woad is one of the plants from which indigo is produced. At that time, after harvesting, the leaves were crushed using a woad stone mill and turned into small balls to be transported to dye houses in continental Europe, where they were used to create indigo fermentation vats.
We are now in the 21st century and we still make woad balls from our plants, but we use a food processor and a dehydrator and, in less than 24 hours, they are ready to use in our own fermentation vats. Watch the video to see how we do it!
