In search of the lost scutcher

By the end of June, there I went, all the way up Minho, hoping to find one of those mechanic scutchers still in working condition.
But you can't win them all, and although the machine was there, and working, the owner, Rosa, hasn't grown flax in a couple of years, so she doesn't need to have it ready to function, and thus keeps it in storage. The last time she grew flax, it was all scutched at the moment, so now she spins it whenever she needs it.
Even so, I confirmed that this scutcher is useless when it comes to processing flax with the characteristics of the Galego Flax, as it is too short to be put in the machine, and being so thin, the fiber would get destroyed by the excess power. Since she got the scutcher, Rosa has been growing an imported european variety, that she could not specify, but that grows to be 1,20m and is much thicker than the Galego.
Having put the scutcher issue aside, we moved on to spinning: she showed me the electric spinning wheel that her son built for her. It's not common to find electric wheels in Portugal nowadays, so, find something that was handmade at home in the 90's, in rural Minho, that is exceptional, for me.
I asked Rosa if she could spin a little flax for me. After a few solid minutes of spinning in silence, I finally said to her:

- Rosa, you can stop now, if you like...
- Oh, I forgot! It's just that I enjoy spinning so much that I forget anything else. I like spinning everything, you know? I'm trying to get some black wool now.
- I can get you some, if you like.
- You can? Do you have it? How about some of that really soft merino wool? Can you get me some of that too?
- Sure!
- And what about that fiber from that animal that looks like a small camel... I don't know the name...
- Small camel... do you mean an Alpaca?
- Yes! I saw it on tv the other day, and I would like to try it.
- I don't have it, but I know
where you can get it, here in Portugal.
- What about silk? Have you tried silk? I saw these ladies at the Vila do Conde fair, once, and it was so beautiful... I really enjoy spinning!
