Vila Nova de Famalicão, 2016-2017

Dia da sementeira do linho no curso de produção de linho têxtil dinamizado no âmbito do programa Saber Fazer em Famalicão

Development of an educational program for the Municipality of Famalicão.
As part of the “Saber Fazer” program in Vila Nova de Famalicão, various activities were held at the Museu da Indústria Têxtil da Bacia do Ave e no Parque da Devesa, aimed at both the school community and the general public.

At the urban gardens in Devesa Park, we launched our first course on textile flax production for the general public. We also cultivated various dye plants, which were used to facilitate natural dyeing workshops for schools and the general public.

At one of the two elementary schools participating in the project, an annual project on flax cultivation and processing was carried out, while the other school focused on the silk-making process, from silkworm to thread. These activities were carried out with the participation of teachers and third-grade students.

The Museu da Indústria Têxtil da Bacia do Ave hosted two activities: a weaving workshop for elementary school students, which made use of the looms on site, and another focused on the silk production cycle, aimed at the general public.

Devesa Park hosted three activities. Two of the activities focused on natural dyeing (planting, extracting pigments, and dyeing), with one aimed at elementary school students from the participating schools and the other at the general public.

The third activity at Parque da Defesa was a long-term linen-making course, which was open to the general public and had approximately 15 participants.

Flax Course in Famalicão

This course on textile flax production took place between April and July 2017 and was aimed at adults living in the municipality of Famalicão. It took place in the urban gardens of Parque da Devesa, where the group of about 15 participants had the opportunity to carry out the entire process, from seed to thread, including a series of activities and field trips to institutions and artisans involved in the field of flax.

Silk at the Museu da Indústria Têxtil da Bacia do Ave

On June 17, 2017, as part of our series on silk, we invited artisan Teresa Frade, from Castelo Branco, to visit the Ave Basin Textile Industry Museum to lead a demonstration and a hands-on workshop on silk cocoon processing, open to the general public.

Natural Dyeing at Devesa Park

Creation of a garden of dye plants in Devesa Park, in Famalicão, where several species relevant to the theme were cultivated, such as madder, dyer’s lily, dyer’s woad, Japanese indigo, and others. The plants were cultivated during the spring and summer and were used in the fall to facilitate two workshops: one for the general public and another for elementary schools.

The Flax Cycle at School

As part of the Saber Fazer program in Famalicão, we carried out the flax production cycle with third-grade students at Fradelos Elementary School. Between April and June, the children had the opportunity to participate in every step of the flax production process, from seed to fabric.

Weaving at the Museu da Indústria Têxtil da Bacia do Ave

At MITBA, weaving workshops were held, led by Fernando Rei and Alice Bernardo, for elementary school students, with the aim of fostering a more experimental and hands-on approach to the subject of textiles.
