Since 2015, we have been conducting research related to flax production, specifically Galician flax, a native variety of Portugal.
In this area, our research has always focused on modernizing small-scale flax production methods, as well as promoting regional flax varieties, such as Galician flax and Moorish flax.
Initially, this research focused on gathering information and insights from small-scale flax producers in the Alto Minho region regarding more traditional practices; it has since evolved into a more comprehensive and multidisciplinary study aimed at supplementing and expanding upon the empirical knowledge initially gathered.
During this research, we developed a prototype of a rotary scutching machine, as well as upgraded equipment that enabled us to conduct training sessions on textile flax production in various locations and for diverse audiences.
The research we have conducted has enabled us to build a knowledge base for many activities, including our training programs, online courses such as the one developed as part of the GatewayCrafts project, initiatives such as Saber Fazer at Serralves and Saber Fazer in Famalicão, and consulting services for private clients.
