Weaving Typologies of Vinhais - “Culture for All in Vinhais” edition

2022

We believe that reviving the knowledge associated with hand weaving is the only way to preserve and perpetuate it, and keep it alive. This technical manual aims to make it possible to reproduce the weaving techniques that are part of this region’s cultural heritage, thereby paving the way for their revival.

In the initial phase, various items collected from several parishes in Vinhais were documented, such as bedspreads, blankets, and traditional costumes, generously donated by members of the community who lovingly preserve these artifacts. Once the types of fabrics representative of the region had been identified, they were thoroughly analyzed and their technical specifications documented. This technical analysis and its translation into the universal language of weaving is one of the indispensable steps. This technical analysis and its translation into the universal language of weaving is one of the essential steps toward making this information accessible and enabling new weavers to reproduce these fabrics.

This publication was developed as part of the “Culture for All in Vinhais” project and is available in both digital and print formats.
