Recém-nascidos

As nossas lagartas do bicho-da-seda nasceram já há uma semana e pouco. Foram muito poucos os ovos que não chegaram a eclodir, o que é óptimo. 
Umas autênticas comilonas, têm sido alimentadas com as folhas mais tenrinhas das amoreiras negras que moram em Serralves. Diz-se que o alimento deve acompanhar o crescimento da lagarta: lagartas pequenas, folhas pequenas, e vice-versa. Nesta fase, temo-las mantidas bem alimentadas e os tabuleiros bem limpos, para garantir que não ficam doentes.

The newborns

Our silkworms hatched a week or so ago! Only a few of the fertilized eggs didn't hatch, which was great.
They eat a lot and we've been feeding them with the black mulberry tree leaves that live in Serralves. They say the size of their food should grow as the worms grow: baby worms will eat baby leaves, and vice-versa.
At this stage we've just been keeping them well fed and the trays well clean, as to make sure they don't get some disease.
