Shearing demonstrations
2015 - present
Shearing demonstration at the Serralves Foundation in 2015, performed by Martin and Susana O’Connel for Saber Fazer
Over the past few years, we have been organizing sheep-shearing demonstrations for various organizations, aimed at the general public.
Shearing is performed by Martin O’Connel, a professional shearer originally from New Zealand and a member of the Saber Fazer team, who shares his technique and professional expertise in this field. Susana O’Connel provides guidance and explains the shearing techniques and principles that respect both the animal and the fiber, right up until the moment the wool is removed.
Following the demonstration, Alice Bernardo addresses the issue of biodiversity and the importance of native breeds, providing further insight into wool as a natural fiber, its unique characteristics, and its benefits. With the economic devaluation of wool as a raw material, shearing practices have also been deteriorating, making it urgent to raise awareness about shearing methods that ensure animal welfare and safeguard the quality of the wool harvested.
